NC Tomorrow and GroWNC

The NC Tomorrow Initiative

NC Tomorrow is a new statewide initiative to help regions in North Carolina address the new economic development challenges facing our communities today.  Led by the N.C. Association of Regional Councils, the goal is to create a more uniform approach to economic development planning across the state.  Within the year, each of the 16 North Carolina Regional Councils, including the Land-of-Sky Regional Council (LOSRC) of Governments, will produce a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy.  When these strategies are completed, the N.C. Association of Regional Councils will begin the process of consolidating the regional strategies into one state-wide strategy aimed at spurring economic development and job growth throughout the state.

Land-of-Sky Regional Council is leading the effort to develop the regional CEDS in Region B.   The LOSRC Regional CEDS will cover the region’s four counties:  Buncombe, Madison, Henderson and Transylvania.

What is GroWNC?

GroWNC is a 5-county project to create a regional vision and strategies for economic prosperity, quality growth, and sustainable development.  This initiative willweave together existing planning documents and datasets from across the 5-county region and from these, develop multiple scenarios for future growth and identify specific projects that exemplify a shared regional vision.  The project will focus on several key areas including economic development, housing, natural and cultural resources, health, transportation, energy, and land use.

Workgroups have been formed to explore these key areas. Vital questions being explored at workgroup meetings include:

  • Identifying Issues and Opportunities Common to All 5 Counties
  • Developing an Initial Vision for the Region
  • Defining Regionally-Important Values, Goals, and Objectives

This is an excellent opportunity for the public to ensure that the values, challenges, and goals associated with their work become integrated into this regional initiative.

The CEDS Strategy Committee is a natural fit in the economic development workgroup. Through the workgroup’s discussion, we can discover strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in our region and identify the means to meet these challenges through partnership and innovation.
